Don't Choke on the Vote: Your General Election Guide for Compton |
Mail ballots are arriving, and Compton voters have every reason to fill them out |

Ballots are already sitting on kitchen tables across Compton, and the clock is running toward the Nov. 3 general election.
California counties began sending out mail ballots and opening drop boxes on Oct. 5.
The message for Compton voters is blunt: don't choke on the vote.
Sitting out does not keep you out of the decision; it simply hands that decision to someone else.
Local contests can swing on a handful of votes, and the winners shape everything from street repairs and policing to parks, development and schools.
Unlike the presidential race, most state and local seats go to whoever simply collects the most votes.
That means every ballot cast in Compton counts directly.
Waiting for a flawless candidate is a trap.
No one will match your views on every issue, so the better question is who comes closest to representing your family, your block and your community.
Campaign slogans are built to stir anger and fear, while rent, utility bills, gas prices, public safety, homelessness, jobs and small businesses quietly shape daily life.
Study the records, weigh the promises against reality, and make a choice you can live with.
There is history behind that choice, too.
People marched, were jailed, beaten, fired and even killed so that others could walk into a polling place.
Fights over who gets to vote happen precisely because votes carry power.
Oct. 19 is the last day to register online, though residents can still register and vote the same day at a vote center or the county elections office.
Vote centers across Los Angeles County open for early in-person voting on Oct. 24.
On Election Day, polls run from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., mailed ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 3, and drop-box returns are due by 8 p.m.
Voters can also sign up with the state to track their ballots from mailbox to final count.
Fill it out, mail it back or show up in person, but make your voice count. |
