Why Jeanette Grant Deserves Teacher of the Year Honors in Compton |
A career of student mentorship spanning Compton Unified School District classrooms |

Some educators clock out when the final bell rings, but Jeanette Grant has never treated teaching as a nine-to-five job.
Across her career in the Compton Unified School District, she has guided students at King Elementary, Vanguard, Dominguez High School and Centennial High School.
Now community supporters are rallying behind her as a deserving choice for teacher of the year.
Her path began at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where a campus sign greeted every student as a scholar and a champion.
That message never left her.
She set out to become both: a lifelong learner and a fierce advocate for the young people around her.
By 17, she was already spending time on a college campus, getting an early look at what education could unlock.
Her first classroom, at King Elementary, introduced her to children carrying burdens far heavier than homework.
Some were in foster care, some had a parent behind bars, and many simply needed one steady adult who believed in them.
Grant became that adult.
She paired lessons in math and English with encouragement, structure, compassion and hope.
As some of those children grew older, she moved into high school classrooms so she could keep supporting them on the road to adulthood.
That decision turned a teaching job into years of student mentorship.
Families and colleagues describe her as a problem solver, an advocate and a trusted resource well beyond the classroom.
Teachers rarely get applause for the hours spent planning lessons, calling parents and helping students through crises no curriculum covers.
Yet those quiet moments are often the lessons students carry for life.
Supporters argue that Compton needs educators who understand both the classroom and the community, and Grant has proven she understands both.
Years after walking beneath that sign about scholars and champions, she is helping raise the next generation of them right here in Compton. |
